I believe that everyone agrees with me that dialogue is very important in film. It has a lot of uses. For example by just listening to the dialogue of a character without even looking at the character, you will know his/her gender, roughly his/her age group, his/her ability to communicate with someone or conveying any message he/she wants and sometimes even the character’s personality.

In filmmaking, money equals to time therefore many filmmakers uses dialogue to convey some important message to the audiences. This helps to save time, as the message that needs to be told, does not occupy a scene in the film.

Good dialogue will help in making the film famous or remembered by the audiences. For example, in the movie, Night In The Museum there was a very funny dialogue between the main character and the big woodenhead, something like “Dumb dumb you give me gum gum”. This sentence in the dialogue is even said till now!

Good dialogue also provokes the audiences’ emotion; bringing the audience closer to the character.

Parts of the dialogue can give the audiences a rough idea on what type of film the movie is. Using the same example, just by listening to anyone saying that part of the dialogue, you will know that Night In The Museum is a comedy film.

Dialogue can also be used to trick the audiences into believing something untrue, creating a unexpected scene in the later part of the movie. For example, the movie Usual Suspect, the dialogue between the policeman and the main character is untrue, but the actor tone and well link between the story and the dialogue make it sound so real.

However, over reliance on dialogue will cause negative effect. For example, over use of dialogue will bore the audiences, as there is only talking involve, no action.

For a dialogue to be successful, you need not only a good write but also a good actor. If the actor conveys the dialogue correctly, using the right tone, by just listening to the actor dialogue you will know his emotion at that time. For example, more forceful dialogue shows that the actor emotion is brought to the peak. Actor feeling sad, angry, excited or etc depends on the tone he used when saying the dialogue.

I think dialogue should be used when certain information must be told in order for the audiences to understand the movie. Also dialogue famous when you are using screening characters talking through the phone.

Recently I have a sectional lunch with my secondary school band junior. They were all complaining about our new teacher in charge, who has taken over us only last year. This give me an idea of what should I write about the coming reflection.

I was chosen as a Band Leader when I was in sec4. This was when I started to know all the ugly side of teachers. The first teacher in charge I worked with was a lady who has already married and has a cute baby boy. Thus, she had little time for the band and most of the performances planning and management of the band are all done by the selected leaders. That year I was having my n level therefore I really have little time left for myself with all the studies and band stuff I needed to handle. Me and the other bandleaders started to complaint about her for doing too little things for the band.

Finally, after a few months the school promoted her to some other important role therefore she was replaced with another guy teacher. He also has a cute little son about 2 to3 years old. And he was previously from a military band same as our late instructor whom we really looked up to. Therefore, everyone thought that finally the band is going to have a better teacher in charge. However, until now I still could not confirm with that sentence.

When he first steps into the band, he wanted to change everything. I am not saying that changing is a bad thing but most of the things he wanted to change were not favorable to not only me but the whole entire band.

Firstly, when I gave him a list of bandleader I have chosen to work with me next year, he totally rejects every single one. As next year was a competition year, I was very determined to put one of the senior guy (lets call him Z) as a Drum Major of the band. This was because he had been training since the previous year therefore he will stand a chance to win the award of Most Drum Major. And Z was not only chosen by me allow, but the ex seniors of the band. However, the only reason he gave me for rejecting him was Z is always late for school therefore the discipline board has a bad impression on him. “Okay fine, it’s a easy thing to solve.” I thought. I just need to tell Z to stop being late for school. And he did! But the teacher still said he could not put him as a DM even though he had change he still had pass record of it. Come On! The one of the thing about having CCA is to train student to be responsible! And the government is also promoting thing the yellow ribbon thingy. Not to just people with his/her past and GIVE THEM A CHANCE TO CHANGE! So why is he not giving Z a chance! Moreover, isn’t that a good thing that CCA actually improve ones character or performance in school?

Then he came out with a new list of leaders and the only reasoning of choosing them was because they have potential. Potential? How do you define that? How do you know when you just know them for about a few months?

A lot of people go against the changes. Okay lets not be bias, I agree that some of the reason for going against the changes is because we could not accept the changes. Too much at one time I guess. And maybe we are still too young to understand or look on an adult point of view.
To be honest, there is also a lot of things he had done for us. For example the amount of time he is willing to spend in the band and a lot of planning cannot be done without his help.

However, he is always telling everyone different thing, like acting differently in front of different people. Seriously until down I still don’t know if he is trustworthy, helping or harming.

Seriously what is wrong with those teenagers? Are they out of their mind or what? Even though I am a teenager myself but their behaviors really disgust me. Firstly the Hwa Chong JC guy. What is the point of having high IQ but low in EQ? Beating up an uncle who is like 40 years old older then you in front of all the passages. Secondly the recording of your own violent act and proudly post it up on You Tube.  Both of this conclude one thing, teenagers are now really very brave and they simply thinks that all this violent act is cool!

The JC guy thinks it is cool to protect this girlfriend on getting insulted by the bus diver by beating them up in front of so many passages to show his braver, as if he is giving the passages a performance on stage. And the teenagers who posted on You Tube are not afraid that the police may track them down and arrest them and put them into a Boys Home or something. Or maybe they are actually waiting for the police to do that because they feel it is cool to have a record saying that you have been put into a Boys Home before.

This “cool” thing really causing a lot of trouble for teenagers now. They think that doing all the bad things in the world for example smoking, stealing, fighting scolding the teachers and etc, they will be name as “cool”. Come on, you can be cool in many other ways!

I think that the band Black Eye Peas is cool, not because they go around beating up people and post it on You tube but is the way they dress and the way they sing.

I think that my grandpa is cool, not because he smokes (actually when he smokes his “coolness” is gone) but because in his age he is still so healthy, riding his own made bicycle around the neighbourhood without reeling tire at all.

Oh and I think that being in Film Sound Video is cool, not because they teaches you how to get into a Boys or Girls Home but because this is the only filming course available in Singapore!

So being “cool” does not equal to being “bad” but rather I think is being unique in a good way. So hopefully teenagers can understand this before getting themselves into trouble.

Similarly to Aristotle way of writing, the main actor from the movie has recognized his mistake and learnt something (anagornsis), through the conflicts between man against man and man against self in the movie.

In the movie Jess has a bad relationship with his family members especially his father. He was also jealous of his youngest sister because she has all her attention she wants from his father. In school, Jess was always being bullied by his friends. The only thing he enjoyed was creating fantasy character in his book, which he kept it only to himself. This developed 4 conflicts; Jess and his father, Jess and his youngest sister, Jess and his friends, Jess and himself.

When Jess meets Leslie, all his conflicts changed for the better. Leslie being a brave character, she brings Jess to open himself with his talent. She helps Jess to be confidence with his drawing and be who he wants to be. When they first went to the forest, Leslie starts to come up with fantasy imagination. In the beginning, Jess kept saying that she was crazy but later he starts to enjoy all the imagination he and Leslie come up with.

Despite always being bullied by his schoolmates, Jess still helped them when they are in trouble. This brings their friendship together.

Then later Leslie died in an accident. Jess starts blaming himself for not meeting up with Leslie that day she had her accident. He starts to mix up reality and the imagination he had with Leslie. He kept thinking that Leslie was caught by the evil Dark Master. At the end when Jess imagines that he was caught by the Dark Master, he then wakes up from his imagination and found out that the Dark Master he was imagining all along was his very own father. The moment his father hug him tightly in his arms, Jess finally felt his father’s love.

When Jess was healing from the pain of Leslie death, his youngest sister tried to help him but he kept pushing her away. Finally when he realist the pain he cause to his youngest sister, he solve it by building a bridge to the place Leslie had named it as terabithia and shared the secret he had with Leslie to his youngest sister.

When he reaches his tuition centre, Keat is surprise to hear that he is going to have a new tuition teacher teaching him math.

After a few minutes later, Keat saw a familiar figure walking into the classroom. It is Mary! Keat’s jaw drop wide open. Mary sits beside him giving him her fake smile. Keat smile back at her with an innocent look on his face.

“Hi Keat. You can call me Ms Mary. I think that we have know each other well enough.” Giving another fake smile. “Now shall we start?”

Keat nod innocently.

After going through a few question, Keat starts to get bore. “Mary has a little lamb… little lamb … little lamb … …” Keat swing while singing.

“Trying to insult my name!” Mary shouts at Keat, banging her hand on the nearest table.

Keat jump up. “No I… I….”

Mary walks angrily to Keat who lower his head looking scare.

“You little monster! I am going to… ahhhh..” Mary gives out a loud scream before tripping on the chocolate wrapper Keat had thrown it on the floor.

Keat cover his mouth with his hand, trying not to laugh.

“You!…” Mary stands up.

Before Mary continues Keat has already dash towards the tuition exit door with his bag

A brief summary on what the issue is about. Singapore government have requested for a 60% (if I am not wrong) pay rise recently. One of their reasons is that high incomes are curial to attract the best talent and curb corruption.

I agree with their reasoning. To be honest, no matter how loyal you are to Singapore and how very much you wished to be a government so that you can serve your country, if working as a government your pay will be low, you will not have any interest anymore. Money is normally to the key of anything. So it is reasonable that if Singapore government wants to attract talented people to sever the country with them, a high income will be one of a useful strategy.

However, will this instead attract greedy people who would in turn corrupt the government? I think there must be also a sense of willingness to serve the country, not only because of the high pay it provides. This will help to minimums corruption in the government as people serving it have the interest in serving the country, not only having interest in the high income it provides.

I remember the first time when I heard about this news was in another country’s news report. I was shocked to see our Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in that country’s news so I stop changing the channel and watched it. The news reporter gave comments about this by saying that Singapore PM is getting an annual salary of US$2.05million, which is 5 times higher than U.S. President if they get their pay rise. My jaw was wide open. Singapore is such a small country compare to U.S. but their PM is getting higher pay then U.S. President! This just tells us how high Singapore taxes are.

I too saw a report on this on a Asia news on the internet and get to know another reason. Singapore government thinks that their government should earn a higher pay than private sector so as to attract talented workers again. Okay it is reasonable, but don’t tell me that if the private sector have their income increased again Singapore government will be announcing another government pay increase? By the time Singapore government are going to earn billion of dollars per annual. This is a good reasoning but not the best one to convince people I think.

Later on I got another information again that Singapore premier Lee who earned S$2.5 million last year, has said he would donate his pay raise to charity. In my heart I was thinking, you are donating money to charity because you earn too much? This is really very funny. And I heard from my sister that actually it benefits Mr Lee indirectly, because Mr Lee will be having something like a tax free (if I am not wrong) if he donates his money to the charity.

So what can the citizen do if they don’t agree with the increase? Write in to the newspaper? No, some of the newspaper company may not dare to report it. Or maybe just gather around and giving your own opinion about it? No, you will be charge of illegal gathering. I really don’t know. ☺

Sometimes I am wandering does this consider that Singapore government is corrupted? For your information we are ranked fifth for most corrupt free country in the world last year. So I think they are not corrupted since we are ranked fifth out of so many countries. ☺

Let me first give a brief story about it. Peter Parker (Spiderman) finally decided to ask M.J. to marry him as he now knows how to handle his duties as a superhero. After that there were a series of unfortunate events happened on Peter Parker; his best friend wanted to take revenge on him, his relationship with M.J., his studies and career starts to turn bad and he found out that the real person who killed his uncle was now running away from prison. Under the influence of the black suit and all the pressure he was facing, Peter Park had a 180 changed in his character. After waking up from this bad experience, Peter Park find himself finding 2 greatest evil who had join their power and were determine to kill him. Then the story goes on.

The movie is really super good. I like the beginning part of the film where they introduces all the crews and casts who were involve in the film, while revising the previous story of Spiderman 1 and Spiderman 2 by playing some parts of the movies. This is a very good used of timing, just like killing two birds with one stone.

This movie is like all in one film. During the movie, there were a lot of sudden and unexpected action and scary scenes. And this movie added a lot of comical scenes in it, therefore it was also very funny. So there were scary scenes, action scenes and comical scenes!

It is also very educational. I learnt a lot of things in this movie. For example, the important of families and friends, and revenge not only does not solve the root of the problem, it will make your life miserable by filling it with anger and sadness.

Overall, this is really a film worth watching. ☺

I think my reflection is too short so decided to write about my CCA I joined during my secondary school.

My CCA was Military Band. I think this was the best part of my secondary school memories. Being in a Military Band was really tough. We have to learnt marching and a musical instrument, which was assigned to us. After learning all the basics, we have to learnt formation techniques; for example how to remember your movement and position while playing and marching with your instrument. Since it is a Military Band discipline is very important. Therefore, there were a lot of rules and regulations we need to follow. There are a lot of band particles too, about 3 times a week. If there is competition, there will be even more particles.

I went through 3 times of Display Band Competition. The most memoarable one was 2004 competition. There was some conflict going on and people were saying that we could not get a gold that year. Luckily, that year we have very good bandleaders. They encourage us to determine on, despite all the negative comments made by outsiders. We really worked extremely hard that year. We had nearly 5 particles per week no matter rain or shine. I could still remember one of the particles it was raining very heavily. However, we still were marching under the rain. And there was one part in our formation, where we have to put now our instrument on the muddy field and do some gimmicks, then picked it up again and continue with our formation. Many band members’ instruments mouthpieces where stick with mud and grass from the field, when we put our instrument down on it. Despite that, we still force ourselves to put the dirty mouthpieces inside our mouth and continue with our formation. Sometimes, band particles were so tough that some band members break down and cried.

All this was worth it when we got gold and managed to prove the others that we are still strong and still holding up the name of a gold medalist band.

Of course going through so much I learnt a lot of things. The best thing I learnt was the team spirit. The feeling of everyone going all out for their common goal, it is really great.

Bowen Military Band is just like my second home. We do everything together like one big family, for example when we are having meals together, we will automatically wait for everyone to settle now with their food before everyone starts eating. Even some of the real families do not do that I guess. That is how close we are.

Now that I have left the school already, I really miss the band a lot. It is just like one part of me is gone. However, life must still goes on and the wonderful memories I have with the band will never disappear. ☺
